Child Examination (CHDP)
Q: What is a CHDP examination?
A: This is a well child examination for your child at a
doctor’s office or clinic
certified to do CHDP examinations. You need
to have your child visit the
physician’s office or clinic every few
months to once a year to be sure
they are growing and developing in a
healthy way and have had all their
preventive screens and
immunizations. The screens include dental,
vision, hearing, growth,
development, blood, urine, and at specific ages
lead and tuberculosis.
A complete history and physical are also done
and the staff also gives
advice on child safety, nutrition, dental care,
and parenting.
Q: How often should my child have a CHDP examination?
A: Every two months until six months old, then every six months
to two
years of age, before preschool and before first grade, and
approximately
every three years after that. CHDP exams are for your
child when
he/she is well. If your child becomes ill he should see a
doctor at that
time as well.
Q: Where can I go for a CHDP examination?
A: Several local physicians and clinics are CHDP providers. Call and
set up
an appointment with the provider of your choice. Here are the

Q: What if my
child is found to have a health problem during a
CHDP examination?
A: Your physician will treat the problem or refer you to a specialist. CHDP
does not pay for the treatment.
However, if you have Medi-Cal already, it will cover your care.
California Treatment Program covers the care if you do not have
insurance. California Treatment Program will not cover your child
except
for the problems found on the CHDP exam and then only for a
short
time.
It is very important you apply for Healthy Families Insurance if you
do
not have any so that your child will be covered for other
illnesses.
