CHILD SAFETY SEATS
Q. I heard you're giving away car seats. How can I get one?
A. We have low-back booster seats that are free to qualified
low-income
families. These boosters are for children weighing at least
40 lbs and
who do not fall asleep in the car and if the car has a
headrest built into
the seat. A technician will have to see your child
and your car to
determine if this type of booster will be the best
choice for your child.
Our other boosters and car seats are available for $44 or less to
low
income parents. Parents who are not on financial assistance may
bring
their car seat or booster, purchased at a store, for free
installation
and/or inspection, and instruction on its use.
We offer appointments on Fridays only, between 1:00 pm and 5 pm,
call
831-637-5367 to make an appointment.
Q. I am expecting a baby soon and want to get my car seat before
the birth.
A. We ask that you wait until the child is born, because our
technicians will
fit the child to the car seat and the car seat to the
car. We suggest you
borrow a car seat to get the baby home from the
hospital, and then
schedule an appointment with us to get your own
seat. If you are unable
to borrow a seat, please call before your due
date to make arrangement.
Again our seats are available only to
qualified low-income families.
Q. Can I get a car seat to use for my grandchildren when they
visit
me?
A. Our low-cost seats and boosters are available only to the primary
caregiver of a child, whether you are the parent or grandparent, or
other
guardian. But you may bring a seat that you have purchased to us
for
free installation and fitting to your grandchild. We offer
appointments
between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm. Call 831-637-5367 to make an
appointment.

HELMETS
Q. Do I have to be low-income to buy a helmet from your program?
A. No. Anyone (adults included) can purchase helmets at reduced
prices.
Please call our office before you come in to make sure we are
available
to fit your helmet. 831-637-5367.
Q. My grandchild lives out of town. Can I buy a helmet for him/her
at your office?
A. The child must be present at time of purchase, so that we can fit
the
helmet properly and show you how to adjust it as the child grows.
Q. Can I buy a helmet at a store and bring it in for fitting?
A. Yes. Just call the Health Education office, Monday through Friday
between 8 and 5 to schedule an appointment. Our staff will be happy
to
help you. Call us at 831-637-5367.
Q. How can I tell
if my child's helmet fits properly?
A. The best way to tell is to buckle the chinstrap and have the child
shake
his/her head back and forth. The helmet should not move around
on the
head. The rule of thumb is that there must be room for two
fingers
between the eyebrows and the front rim of the helmet, and also
under
the chinstrap. The side straps must come to a "V" below the ear
lobe. If
you still aren't sure about the fit, you may bring the helmet
and the child
in to be fitted by our staff. Just call the Health
Education office, Monday
through Friday between 8 and 5 to schedule an
appointment. Our staff
will be happy to help you. 831-637-5367.
Q. How can I get the "Safe Moves City" to my child's school?
A. The best way is to let your child's teacher know about it and have
the
teacher call the Health Education office, Monday through Friday
between
8:00 am and 5:00 pm at 831-637-5367, to schedule a time and
date will
work for the school.
